Barangay 31 officials are calling for recommendations from the City Health Office (CHO) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) with regard to a foul odor that had invaded the Bacolod City community. The smell of ammonia was said to have originated from the nearby Occidental Ice Plant and cold storage facility.
According to Barangay 31 Captain German Bullolaza, Jr., several individuals complained of the bad odor around 6:00 a.m. yesterday, with some experiencing dizziness and headaches.
He also took note of three senior citizens reporting shortness of breath, dizziness, and headaches.
However, the barangay captain said the odor dissipated after two hours as the ice facility reportedly fixed the problem.
Despite the development, Bullolaza is still seeking a formal inspection in order to “ensure that the lives of the people are safe.”
Based on an initial investigation, ammonia had leaked after a pipe where the substance was being stored broke, causing the foul odor to spread./DGB, WDJ
