Sonny Boy Jaro of Silay City lost a World Boxing Council-Asia Boxing Council (WBC-Asia) bantamweight title fight over the weekend, falling via seventh round stoppage to Thai fighter Nawaphon Kaikanha at the Workpoint Studio in Bang Phun, Thailand.
The first five rounds were a technical bout with Kaikanha jabbing, showing a lot of respect for his hard-punching Filipino opponent, who threw a punch at a time. After learning from one of the scoring judges that he had a commanding lead, the Thai fighter aggressively opened the sixth round with combinations; however, Jaro covered and took the shots well.
In the seventh round, after both boxers landed quality shots, Kaikanha launched a body shot that dropped Jaro to the canvas. He tried to get up but the referee waved it off.
The Negrense boxer, who previously held the WBC world flyweight title, WBC international super flyweight title, Asia Boxing Federation bantamweight belt, International Boxing Federation Pan-Pacific light flyweight belt, and Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation light flyweight belt, was hoping for a better showing in order for a chance at another world title before retiring.
With the defeat, the 37-year-old Jaro saw his record drop to 45 wins, 15 losses, and five draws./ASC, WDJ
