“…Love your neighbor as yourself…” –Mark 12:31
For District Governor of Rotary International District 3810 Liza Vicencio Elorde, whose sixth term begins on July 1, she wants to see more Rotarians become true champions in helping the less fortunate by being selfless heroes who will battle grinding poverty, lack of knowledge, ailments, sickness and diseases, and other debilitating problems hounding a great number of Filipinos.
During her speech at the start of the District 3810 Training Assembly at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila, she said, “The more responsible role [for] Rotarians [is] doing good for others.” She noted, ever since the establishment of Rotary’s first chapters in the Philippines and Asia, Rotarians had always been (and continues to be) on the forefront of projects aimed at uplifting the lives, intellect, health, and well-being of everyone.
During last year’s training assembly, she discussed the “Governor’s Challenge,” which involved projects that Rotarians from Manila, Pasay City, Cavite, and Occidental Mindoro will strive to achieve successfully. Among the projects includes those intended for the youth, whether they are studying or have not been given the opportunity of a formal education.
Elorde allowed Rotarians from District 3810 to choose what projects they would pursue for young Filipino children.
The underlying purpose of conducting projects for the youth is to ensure they are pre-occupied with worthwhile activities that keep them away from vices that could lead them to perdition. It also gives them a chance to participate in activities that promote the good of others.
Incumbent District 3810 Governor Rudy Bediones expressed this agreement with Elorde during his speech, where he stressed the truth that Rotarians are the true “superheroes” of our time because they perform actual service that help others in need.
He took time out to enumerate the many projects Rotarians from Manila, Pasay City, Cavite, and Occidental Mindoro annually.
Continuing efforts to fight polio is a primary project, which actually is a worldwide concern of Rotary. Additionally, Rotarians are also engaged in assisting those victimized by calamity, either natural or man-made; along with projects that put up artesian wells, or water systems, that provide clean and potable drinking water to far-flung areas.
What makes these “charitable acts?” The fact that they spend their own money for projects. No money is given to them by the government, politicians, or any other groups. All of their acts are also pure voluntary, which means Rotarians are serving others selflessly on their own volition.
