The head of the Negros chapter of Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), which considers itself a militant and anti-imperialist labor center, yesterday said, during a Labor Day demonstration, their group is dismayed by the current choices for senate as they lack solid positions on workers’ rights.
According to KMU-Negros head Noli Rosales, he has not heard any agendas about workers’ rights during senatorial debates, caucuses, and media-hosted town hall meetings.
In addition, the labor advocate said he has yet to hear senators pushing for increased wages or plans to introduce a law that would bring an end to job contractualization.
Earlier this week, the newly-created “Labor Win” coalition, which was organized by the Labor Unity for the Sugar Industry, named ending contractualization as one of their tenets.
The group, which calls themselves “pro-worker” and “pro-agriculture,” also seeks “decent” jobs and wages, just treatment for overseas Filipino workers, lowered inflation, and a stronger agriculture sector.
In terms of the upcoming midterm elections, the group noted, “If we want senators who can represent the welfare of the labor sector, we should elect candidates who come from the workers’ ranks.”/DGB, WDJ
