The Iloilo City Public Library (ICPL) seeks to instill morals through monthly storytelling.
“We encourage parents to bring their children and make them join us because most of the stories we read have moral lessons, which can serve as guide as they grow up,” said City Librarian Marion Aguirre.
Storytelling sessions will be held at the Plaza Libertad children’s playground.
“When Mayor Jose Espinosa III put up the playground, where the children are playing, we decided to have our storytelling there because the venue is more appealing for the children,” she explained.
According to a Psychology Today blog by psychotherapist Kimberly Key, “The hope for the future lies in the stories we continue to tell and the meaning we ascribe to them.”
“Humans learn from stories and their ability to comprehend meaning,” she explained. “Stories instruct us on what’s valuable while inspiring us to reach beyond what we think we are capable of doing.”
Last year, in an effort to encourage reading, district libraries were being considered for Iloilo City. According to Aguirre, district libraries are established in a studio-type layout and offer the same services as the ICPL.
“In the advent of technology, traditional way of reading should still remain,” she noted./WDJ
