Following their stop in Bacolod City earlier this week, Lakbay ng Taumbayan, a nationwide march that began in Marawi City last week, with a march originating from the north starting in Baguio City on May 5, visited Iloilo City yesterday, where demonstrators spoke out on the effects of development and urbanization on farmers.
According to a release from the organization, “With the increasing degree of urbanization and subsequent population growth, the private-led development of the province has also led to the intensification of conflict over agrarian reform.”
One march participant, Ireneo Cerilla, who also goes by “Ka Rene,” said, “Forced land grabbing and [the] conversion of agrarian lands is a huge injustice.”
He made note of the ongoing issue with the Federation of Sicogon Farmers and Fisherfolks Association (FESIFFA), who are facing a land dispute on Sicogon Island, located within the jurisdiction of Carles, Iloilo.
“The experience of FESIFFA reflects the centuries-old reality of oppression, marginalization, neglect, and resistance that defines the lives of Filipino farmers.”
Earlier this year, the Department of Agrarian Reform issued a cease and desist order against ongoing development on the island after FESIFFA claimed developer Ayala Land Inc. was not compliant with a memorandum of agreement surrounding a proposed redevelopment project.
Meanwhile, the group also touched upon the issue of food security, calling attention to the conversion of agricultural land into subdivisions.
“Instances like the conversion of first-class irrigated rice lands by corporations such as the Villar-owned Camella Homes are hugely responsible for the current concerns on food security in the region.” the group pointed out.
During their earlier stop in Bacolod City, demonstrators demanded farmers be granted ownership of the lands they till./WDJ
