After major earthquakes struck Pampanga and Eastern Samar earlier this week, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) posted an advisory regarding earthquakes on social media, providing tips on what to do before, during, and after a tremor strikes.
In terms of preparedness, NDRRMC recommends having an evacuation plan; ensuring all needed repairs are attended to; harmful chemicals and flammable materials are stored safely; heavy furniture and hanging objects are secured; and to have a “Go Bag” ready, which should contain various “survival items.”
They also recommend participating in earthquake drills.
While an earthquake is taking place, NDRRMC suggests taking cover and to keep away from glass windows and heavy objects when indoors; if outdoors, it is recommended to stay away from buildings, trees, electrical posts, and landslide-prone areas.
Once the shaking subsides, one must check for injuries, be aware of any additional advisories, check for spilled chemicals and damage to electric or gas lines, along with heeding warnings on not re-entering buildings until it is declared safe.
Last Tuesday’s quake, while recorded northwest of San Julian, Eastern Samar, still prompted evacuations in Bacolod City and Iloilo City./WDJ
