Negrense coaches and Physical Education teachers gained new knowledge during the
Negros Basketball Association-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (NBA-SBP) coaching clinic recently at the St. John’s Institute in Bacolod City.
SBP Coaches’ Committee head Joseph Uichico lauded the success of the two-day event, which was attended by coaches from public and private schools as well as from local government units from Escalante City down to Cauayan town.
Uichico said that the primary objective of the program is to develop coaches from the grassroots like Physical Education teachers as well as those who coaches small schools and in the inter- barangay tournaments.
“This clinic was basically teaching coaches the fundamentals of basketball,” Uichico said. “Before teaching them the advance concepts of coaching, they have to know, understand, even master the fundamentals of the sport.”
“We can’t take short cuts in the process because we will end up teaching the wrong things,” he added. “Those coaches in Manila had many tournaments and clinics which are accessible to them. That’s why we are concentrating in the provinces.”
The former PBA champion coach also said that after the Level 1, coaches will move up to the next level of learning which is the Level 1.2, which is scheduled to be held in Iloilo on June./ASC, WDJ
