The Department of Health-Region VI (DOH-6) recently revealed a four-day old infant from Bacolod City is the youngest confirmed measles case in the Western Visayas.
DOH-6 Child Health Program medical coordinator, Dr. Mary Jane Juanico, believes the baby possibly contracted the illness as the mother may have been infected during her third trimester.
However, official reports have yet to confirm the mother’s measles status.
The DOH-6 official affirmed the baby was born at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital on February 1.
Meanwhile, the Bacolod City Health Office confirmed both mother and child have since been discharged but, while test results are still pending, they remain under DOH-6 monitoring.
As of yesterday, data showed there are a total of 688 suspected measles cases across the region, with Negros Occidental still recording the most with 253.
Bacolod City alone boasts 97 cases./WDJ
