534 Negros Occidental athletes expected to compete

Negros Occidental will be sending 534 athletes to the 2019 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) meet, which opens on Sunday at the Villareal Stadium in Roxas City, Capiz. Department of Education-Division of Negros Occidental Sports Coordinator Romeo Sison said the province’s athletes will be competing in 15 elementary division events and 17 secondary events.

Negros Occidental is coming into the competition as defending elementary boys’ basketball champions. They are also defending secondary division titles in girls’ volleyball, girls’ athletics, softball, and football.

The provincial official named Iloilo as the province’s “strongest opponent.”

“We expect the other provinces to step up and threaten Negros and Iloilo’s dominance,” he said.

Among the other events set to take place include 3×3 basketball, billiards, boxing, arnis, archery, badminton, baseball, chess, futsal, gymnastics, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, wrestling, wushu, pencak silat, and dancesport.

There will also be a paragames competition.

WVRAA serves as a qualifier for 2019 Palarong Pambansa, which will be staged in Davao City./ASC, WDJ
