Iloilo City Mayor Jose Espinosa III recently called for a clean-up drive for the city’s coastal communities.
“What they have been doing in Boracay and, now, in Manila Bay has created positive results,” he said. “That is why we will spearhead a coastal clean-up here in our city to make the shores swimmable, clean, and safe.”
“We will be [consulting] the City Health Office and non-governmental organizations on how to clean the coastal areas,” the mayor added. “Since it is residential, we will [also] look into putting up communal comfort rooms and septic tanks.”
The proposed clean-up is expected to be done in phases, starting in Barangays Calumpang and San Juan, located in the city’s Molo district.
The mayor noted, he initiated the clean-up after high E-coliform levels were detected.
E-coliform, or E.coli, is a type of bacteria that can be contracted through contaminated water or food and can lead to kidney failure or death./WDJ
