With Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo recently signing Executive Order No. 22-18, which declares every March 5 as “Renewable Energy Day,” the province became the first to institutionalize support and commitment to renewable energy through an annual commemorative local government event.
“Negros Oriental shall prioritize the utilization of clean, renewable energy, which is abundant in the province,” the declaration read.
Through the order, the province committed to “continuously protect and develop such renewable energy sources and, at the same time, shun operations and activities including sourcing and use of energy sources that are destructive to the environment and harmful to its citizens’ health and livelihood.”
Negros Oriental is currently host to several renewable energy power plants, which utilize geothermal, solar, hydroelectric, and wind sources./DGB, WDJ
