Iloilo City will be hosting the World Read Aloud Day observance for the Visayas tomorrow, February 1, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Ker & Co. building, which is located behind City Hall.

Around 50 A. Montes 1 Elementary School students are expected to participate in the event.

“The purpose of this celebration is to help libraries in the country promote reading and make children read a lot,” said City Librarian Marion Aguirre.

She also made note of technology, which often preoccupies young people and prevents them from taking time to read.

“We are not saying that technology is bad but we want to [expose them to] the importance of reading a book,” the librarian added.

The students will be reading the book “My Father is a Garbage Collector.”

World Read Aloud Day, which is observed in over 173 countries, focuses on the importance of how reading aloud can foster language development, literary knowledge, among other skills./WDJ
