After a mother and her two children fell from a ferris wheel during the Iloilo Dinagyang Festival over the weekend, Iloilo City Councilor Plaridel Nava introduced an ordinance calling for regulations on amusement rides.

He pointed out, there are currently no regulations on such rides and suggested items such as seatbelts or safety bars be installed.

“[It is] OK if you are old enough to understand safety, but here comes a mother with two young children who [did] not understand,” the city official said in a privilege speech during yesterday’s regular session. “It is about time to regulate this.”

Nava also noted a lack of age limitations for rides.

“That is a risk that should not be taken for granted by the city government,” he added.

The city councilor also pointed out, the Iloilo City Public Safety and Transportation Management Office is unable to take action because of the lack of guidelines./WDJ
