Last month, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring January 24 as the International Day of Education, which recognizing the role education plays in peace and development.
According to the resolution, “Education plays a key role in building sustainable and resilient societies.” It also noted education’s contribution to economic growth, skills development, poverty and hunger eradication, among other effects.
The observance also helps fulfill the UN sustainable development goal of quality education.
“Access to inclusive education can help equip locals with the tools required to develop innovative solutions to the world’s greatest problems,” the international organization noted. “For quality education to be provided to the children of impoverished families, investment is needed in educational scholarships, teacher training workshops, school building and improvement of water and electricity access to schools.”
According to the UN, “265 million children and adolescents around the world do not have the opportunity to enter or complete school.”/WDJ
