Senator Manny Pacquiao showed the world he is still far from done yesterday after his unanimous decision win over Adrien Broner and retaining his World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight belt at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada in the United States.
The 117-111, 116-112, 116-112 scores did not reflect how dominant the 40-year-old Filipino fighter was as he had three opportunities to send the backpedaling Broner to the floor.
After testing each other in the opening round, Pacquiao picked up the pace in the second with a flurry of shots to Broner’s body. The Filipino caught the American napping in the third and unloaded a left straight to the head. Broner owned the fourth round as he pushed Pacquiao to the ropes before hitting him with straight. The latter, however, was back at it in the fifth as he rocked Broner with a huge left to the head.
Pacquiao continued to pour it on in the sixth as he landed a huge left to the body, followed by back-to-back 1-2 combos. In the seventh, it was all Pacquiao as he had Broner on the ropes with a flurry of punches. Broner was aggressive early in the eighth but Pacquiao landed lefts and rights, along with a series of flurry on a cornered Broner in the ninth – the latter was saved by the bell.
Pacquiao became cautious in the tenth but still managed to land some punches. The American tried to go for the kill in the last two rounds but could not land a punch.
“I really don’t believe my career is over – I proved it again at the age of 40, Manny Pacquiao’s career still continues,” said the champion, who again challenged Floyd Mayweather Jr. to a rematch./ASC, WDJ
