Region VI comprised 15% of cases
The Department of Health (DOH) yesterday revealed, between December 21 and January 5, there were a total of 340 reported fireworks-related injuries across the country, comprising a 34 percent drop in cases.
While most of the cases resulted in burns, 25 percent of patients suffered eye injuries.
“We urge all those injured from fireworks to immediately consult the nearest health facility to prevent tetanus, [which] can ultimately lead to death,” said Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.
The pyrotechnic item responsible for the most injuries was “kwitis,” which contributed to 22 percent of injuries. The firecracker is typically mounted on a stick and, when lit, shoots upwards.
Meanwhile, the Western Visayas tied for the second-highest number of reported injuries at 15 percent, alongside Region I./WDJ
