The United Nations observes International Human Solidarity Day tomorrow, December 20, a concept based in the original intent of the organization’s formation.
According to the UN, “the organization was founded on a basic premise of unity and harmony among its members expressed in the concept of collective security that relies on the solidarity of its members to unite ‘to maintain international peace and security.’”
Among the issues the observance seeks to tackle is poverty eradication.
In 2002, the UN set up the World Solidarity Fund, which eventually established a trust fund to promote human and social development in developing countries.
The day also seeks to celebrate diversity and remind governments to respect international agreements./WDJ
