The National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC), which is led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), is looking to fast-track 10-year solid waste management plans that have been submitted by cities and municipalities across the country.
“We have a backlog of around 1,200,” DENR Undersecretary for Solid Waste Management and Local Government Unit (LGU) Concerns Benny Antiporda admitted. ‘That’s why we really need to fast-track the approval process, so the LGUs may implement their respective plans for addressing garbage problems in their localities.”
According to a social media post by DENR, the commission approved several localities in Iloilo last month.
Among the policies included in such plans include strategies for recyclables and biodegradable materials, “No Segregation, No Collection” policy implementation, composting, among others./WDJ
