Every November, the Philippines observes National Rice Awareness Month, which is intended to raise an appreciation for the importance of the grain.
The observance was created through Presidential Proclamation No. 524, signed in 2004 by then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
“The government recognizes the role of rice in providing food and in helping alleviate poverty among Filipinos,” the proclamation stated.
Among the activities planned in the region include a Run4RICEponsibility on November 25 at SM City Iloilo, which is comprised of a three-kilometer fun run and Zumba.
A formal event kicked off the observance last Monday in Iloilo City./WDJ
