The inauguration and blessing of the Stonehill Suites last Wednesday was packed with VIPs, including politicians, socialites, and members of the business community. The newly-minted Bacolod City hotel is contributing to the growing tourism industry in Negros Occidental and is ready to serve local and foreign tourists in town for the ongoing MassKara Festival.

The man behind the establishment is Jerry Sy. A well-known businessman and with over a thousand employees on his payroll, his influence on the city and region are noticeable. Simply put, Sy contributes to employment opportunities in the province and the entire Western Visayas.

He’s a job creator, which deserves recognition. After this hotel, branches across the Visayas should be expected.

We need more homegrown business in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental.

Sy is an example of a businessman who started from humble beginnings and, despite success, his feet remain on the ground.

Among those present at the event included former Negros Occidental fourth district Rep. Jeffrey Ferrer, the province’s next vice governor; and incumbent Don Salvador Benedicto Mayor Marxlene Lawrence ‘Mac Mac’ De la Cruz.

De la Cruz is a “hands-on” official, constantly monitoring department heads and executive assistants in order to ensure the timely delivery of basic services. The town’s Kali-Kalihan Festival, held in February every year, is already a tourist attraction. In addition, the “Summer Tourism Capital of Negros Occidental,” with its cold weather and fog, makes the municipality a sought-after destination./WDJ
