Additional overnight quakes in Iloilo, Negros Oriental

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck east of Valderrama, Antique last Thursday evening. The town was later subject to another tremor, a smaller 2.5-magnitude quake, the following morning.

The agency reported no damage recorded as a result of either incident, along with no anticipated aftershocks.

The United States Geological Survey notes 4.0-magnitude quakes are often classified as a Level 4 on the Mercalli intensity scale, where the tremor is more noticeable indoors, with a feeling similar to a heavy truck striking a building.

The quake also caused seismic readings elsewhere on Panay, with lower intensity measurements picked up in Cabatuan and Passi City, both in Iloilo.

Last August, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck Negros Occidental, just west of Sipalay City.

Meanwhile, early yesterday morning, a 2.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Mina, Iloilo around 12:06 a.m. and, around 45 minutes later, another 2.3-magnitude tremor struck the waters west of Basay, Negros Oriental.

Earthquakes ranging between 1.0 and 3.0 in magnitude are often classified as a Level 1, where very few even feel the tremor./WDJ
