The local chapter of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) and the Negros Press Club yesterday condemned the late Wednesday night shooting incident at the home owned by Negrense broadcaster Reynaldo Siason in Talisay City, Negros Occidental.

NUJP-Negros Occidental president Marchel Espina denounced the incident, calling it a “threat” against Siason.

She also reiterated, attacks on journalists is a threat to democracy.

“We called on the authorities to swiftly investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice,” Espina said.

She also urged fellow journalists to report any threats and attacks to the NUJP for documentation and to call on authorities to investigate such incidents.

Press Club President Renato ‘Aksyon Boy’ Duran, meanwhile, said, while no one was hurt, he called the act a “despicable affront” to members of the media.

He also referred to the incident as an assault against press freedom.

Duran added, the press club joins the call for a swift resolution to the case and wants authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and put the perpetrators behind bars./DGB, WDJ
