Every September 15, the United Nations observes International Day of Democracy, which, according to their website, seeks to “invigorate democracy” and respond to “systemic challenges.”
The observance also looks into ways democracies can be more inclusive, with an emphasis on bringing in more youth and representatives from marginalized sectors into the political realm.
In addition, this year, the day is also celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which the UN notes, “freedom and respect for human rights” are “essential elements of democracy.”
The International Day of Democracy also attempts to look into how such political systems can be more innovative and responsive to emerging challenges./WDJ
