Before HB 7044, which establishes June 18 as Bacolod City’s Charter Day, can be submitted for President Rodrigo Duterte’s signature, Senate Majority Floor Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said certain amendments need to be adopted first.

Following a conversation with former Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella, who raised concerns over moving the date from October 19, which was established by RA 7724 and signed in 1994 by then-President Fidel V. Ramos, the senator said two additional dates needed to be included in the final bill.

He explained, October 19 must be recognized to mark the inauguration of city officials and the fourth Sunday of October must be included as the start of the MassKara Festival highlights; all of which would be declared holidays in Bacolod City.

Zubiri affirmed both sides were discussed on the matter.

“We talked to Puentevella and [Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia],” he stated.

The senator expressed optimism the bill will be completed before this year’s MassKara Festival, which begins next month, noting, once the House of Representatives passes the amendments, the bill will be sent to Duterte’s desk./DGB, WDJ
