The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist fisheries division recently conducted a reseeding of blue swimmer crab, locally referred to as kasag, off the coast of Sipaway Island, located at Sitio Caimito in San Carlos City’s Barangay San Juan.

Over 100,000 crabs in their instar phase, or molting stage, were distributed to five local fisherfolk associations.

The provincial office said they undertook the initiative in response to the ongoing practice of gathering berried crabs, or those carrying masses of eggs; along with the capture of undersized and soft-shelled crabs.

They note, 40 barangays have so far undergone reseeding.

Earlier, the Negros Occidental Provincial Environment Management Office, in partnership with the San Carlos City government and its City Environment Management Office, set up dive sites to conduct clean-up activities at the Dapdap area of Sipaway Island.

After nearly two hours, the team of 24 professional divers, recovered items of garbage numbering in the hundreds, including beverage cups, glass bottles, food wrappers, among others./WDJ
