During a recent meeting between Department of Tourism (DOT) Undersecretary Arturo P. Boncato and the Boracay Stakeholders Core Group, the DOT official stressed the necessity for Boracay establishments to be compliant ahead of reopening.

“Only compliant establishments can open when Boracay reopens,” he stated.

The group affirmed “compliant” establishments refer to those in line with regulations set by the DOT, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Malay municipal government, which has jurisdiction over the shuttered resort island.

For DOT-Region VI (DOT-6) director, Atty. Helen J. Catalbas, she believes many establishments are making the effort to clean up their act.

“We all had an understanding that each sector shall police its own ranks by making sure members abide by the rules and regulations,” she said. “Boracay stakeholders heartily accepted their shortcomings and are doing their best to be compliant.”

“We will make sure Boracay is ready with its services and facilities before reopening,” Catalbas added.

Meanwhile, DOT-6 also endorsed local community events, referring to them as “major driving forces in stimulating the tourism industry.”

Among those highlighted include the Mini-Paraw Regatta Race, which takes place in Buenavista, Guimaras; along with the Panakayon Regional Culture and Arts Camp, which held their opening program last month in Miag-ao, Iloilo./WDJ
