Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Han Dongman proclaimed Ilonggo soldiers Second Lt. Ramon P. Celeste and Private first class Felix J. Gallardo ambassadors of peace for their service in the Korean War during a ceremony yesterday at the Richmonde Hotel, in Iloilo City’s Mandurriao district.
The designation affirmed “everlasting gratitude” to the recipients, noting, “We cherish in our hearts the memory of your boundless sacrifices in helping us re-establish our free nation.”
“Veterans deserve the title of hero,” said Han. “The Republic of Korea would not be enjoying peace, democracy, and economic prosperity today without the noble and great sacrifice of Filipino Korean War veterans.”
During the conflict, the Philippine sent 7,420 soldiers to Korea between 1950 and 1955. 113 were killed in action, which 313 were wounded.
The War Memorial of Korea in Seoul, established in commemoration of the Korean War, features artillery, military aircraft, a ship, and tanks on display around its exterior. Also along the sites are flags flying in front of the establishment representing the countries that participated in the war, including the Philippines.
According to the inscription at the foot of the flagpole, “The Philippines was the first Asian nation to send a combat unit to Korea, and the third ground troops, following the US and the UK.”
