A Murcia resident reportedly died of suspected meningococcemia, a serious infection that could lead to meningitis or septicemia.
Murcia Municipal Health Officer, Dr. Raymund Antonio Maguad, said the patient died on Monday after being brought to a hospital last weekend.
He said the individual exhibited symptoms of meningococcemia, including cough, headache, fever, and sore throat.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), meningococcal bacteria can be spread through respiratory and throat secretions, which include saliva and spit.
However, Maguad noted they are equipped with preventative treatment for those in close contact with the patient.
He also pointed out, the case still has to be confirmed through laboratory test.
The patient was immediately buried in a local cemetery in the town./DGB, WDJ
