According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Region VI (DENR-6), 1,932 workers are needed to clean wetlands on shuttered resort island Boracay.
The largest of these wetlands is located in the island’s Barangay Balabag, measuring 10.35 hectares. DENR estimates the area alone will need 774 workers.
The clean-up began yesterday with workers supplied by Department of Labor and Employment’s Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers program.
The program also recruited 57 members of the local Ati community, an indigenous population, to help with the effort.
Workers will be paid P323.50 daily for 30 days, or P9,705 per month./WDJ
