Silliman University recently signed a partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Development Academy of the Philippines to promote indigenous learning systems, along with non-formal education.

The partnership will extend and expand the alternative learning system.

According to DepEd, the alternative learning system serves as a substitute for formal education in instances where students do not have access.

Alternative learning typically takes place outside the classroom and can be conducted at community learning centers, libraries, homes, among other venues.

Last year, the Negros Occidental National Commission for Indigenous Peoples provided scholarships for 50 indigenous students. Eligible recipients were entitled to free tuition, a uniform and book allowance, and a P2,500 monthly stipend./WDJ
