A man who ran for kagawad in the recent barangay elections was gunned down yesterday by four suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) at Sitio Calubihan in Barangay Bantayan, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.
Police identified the fatality as 48-year-old Rodolfo Ambong, a resident of Sitio Mamba-og in the said barangay.
Based on eyewitness testimony, around 6:45 a.m., Ambong was approached by four armed men, who immediately opened fire with 9mm and .45 caliber pistols, killing him on the spot.
Prior to the shooting, witnesses claimed the suspects introduced themselves to Ambong as “members of the New People’s Army.”
Police recovered six empty 9mm and .45 caliber shells from the crime scene, along with two live units of .45 caliber ammunition.
Ambong’s relatives, meanwhile, claimed the victim’s mobile phone and P50,000 in cash went missing and were believed to be taken by the suspects.
Police are presently investigating the incident./DGB, WDJ
