Underwater and coral reefs cleanup in the island paradise of Boracay in Malay, Aklan continues as part of its six months closure and rehabilitation.

Lt. Ramil Palabrica, commander of the Philippine Coast Guard in Malay station, said several groups of scuba divers have been partnering with them to voluntarily swim the depth of waters of the island and pick up non-biodegradable materials to help rehabilitate and preserve the marine environment of Boracay.

“They are coordinating with us for security and joint underwater cleanup,” he said.

Palabrica said these scuba divers could gather minimum of four sacks of garbage within a day of their clean-up activity.

He said the series of underwater clean-up activities cover the waters at the 2.5-kilometer stretch of the island’s beachfront, starting from Station 3 to Station 1.

Once completed, the cleanup may cover the waters near Barangay Yapak, Palabrica added.

He said another group of divers from a private firm in Boracay have already requested for their security during their cleanup next week.

Palabrica said the cleanup in the island commenced three weeks ago through the effort of Boracay Business Administration of Scuba Shops, Boracay Foundation and other organization of divers. (PNA)
