The Dumaguete City-based broadcaster who was shot by unidentified gunmen succumbed to his wounds on Tuesday at the Silliman University Medical Center.
Dumaguete City Police Office (DCPO) director, Police Senior Superintendent Jonathan Pineda, confirmed 46-year-old Edmund Sestoso succumbed to three gunshot wounds to his chest, arms, and legs.
Pineda said they are still conducting an investigation into the incident and noted there are several angles to the case, including the possibility of a personal grudge held by the suspects.
Other angles include Sestoso’s background as a journalist, along with his past links to various people’s organizations.
Last Monday, Sestoso was heading home when he was attacked by motorcycle-riding gunmen.
A concerned pedicab driver tried to help Sestoso by rushing him to the hospital, but the gunmen returned and shot the pedicab’s tires, forcing the victim and several other concerned citizens to wait for another vehicle.
The recent attack was condemned by the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP) and other journalistic organizations, including the Negros Press Club and the Dumaguete City Press Club.
Sestoso was a former NUJP chapter chairman in Negros Oriental and was working for DZGB-FM Dumaguete./DGB, WDJ
