Kakampi Mo Ang Batas

“…Yet, to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God…” –John 1:12-13
Sadness and confidence were the twin emotions that came over me and my siblings after our 84-year-old mother Salvacion Haber Lazo Mauricio died last Wednesday, April 18; two years after losing our father Melanio Pauco Mauricio, Sr. and brother Ariel, both of whom died in 2016. My siblings Philip, Leny, and Marisa; myself; along with respective family and other relatives were saddened by my mother’s death because we know she will be missed terribly, in the same way we have been missing our father and Ariel.
When my parents and Ariel were still alive, we were united in love and understanding. Just like any other Filipino family, whose members entertain individual ideas, beliefs, and perceptions, we had regular difference and spats, which were only temporary.
My mother became a child of God
Sadness notwithstanding, we also felt a degree of confidence with her passing. Whatever sins she may have committed have been forgiven, her soul has been cleansed, and she will be among those to meet Jesus and be brought to the paradise of eternal life.
We were also confident, after an event that occurred 24-hours prior to suffering a massive brain stroke last weekend, that this was God’s will.
My mother attended a despedida party last April 14 for a cousin who was going back to Canada. During the party, a discussion that asked “who are the children of God?” commenced. While she has previously listened to be discuss the matter, it was at that party where she posed the question, “How can one become a child of God?”
She loved God and her fellow man
With her remains interred in Ramos, Tarlac, I see the question my mother posed turned out to be life-changing. I knew, deep in my heart, after she listened to my explanation – a person becomes a child of God after accepting and having faith in Jesus as God and Savior and as God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – my mother became a child of God.
Afterwards, I invited all those gathered for a prayer, where we accepted and offered faith in Jesus as God and Savior and as God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
I am certain her passing came at the will of God. He yearned for my mother to be become a child of God as she fulfilled her faith as a Christian her entire life; exhibited as a loyal wife, selfless mother, servant of God, and expressing her love of God and fellow man.
