Western Visayas athletes broke Palarong Pambansa records in athletic events javelin and shot put.
Ann Catherine Quitoy, a Grade 10 student of Romanito P. Maravilla Sr. National High School, located in Barangay Estefania, Bacolod City, earlier broke the Palarong Pambansa record in the secondary girls’ javelin throw, tossing for 45.72 meters and breaking the 42.85 meter record set last year by Northern Mindanao’s Sylvian Faith Abunda.
Quitoy, originally from Valencia, Negros Oriental, represented the Negros Island Region last year and took silver.
Meanwhile, Himamaylan National High School student Jamela de Asis threw the shot put 11.29 meters, breaking the 26-year-old secondary girls’ shot put record of 11.20 meters.
However, the record-breaking throw earned a silver medal as Kasandra Hazel Alcantara of the National Capital Region set the new record of 11.88 meters.
Another Maravilla High School student, Trexie dela Torre, earned a gold medal in the secondary girls’ long jump; while 15-year-old Rhena Gimarangan of San Carlos City won gold in the paralympic shot put and 100m dash, along with a bronze in the long jump.
In other sports, the Western Visayas defeated the Eastern Visayas, 13-0, in elementary softball; Mimaropa, 18-0, in secondary softball; and the Davao Region, 5-0, in secondary boys’ baseball.
