In a radio interview yesterday, Negros Occidental Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said he is worried the recent shooting involving suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Isabela will affect the planned peace talks.

He said, if it is proven the shooting was perpetrated by the NPA-Special Partisan Unit (SPARU), President Rodrigo Duterte could cancel the talks.

The vice governor stated he hopes police can complete their investigation soon in order to determine who was behind the attack.

Earlier this week, three people were killed, while two others were wounded, after suspected NPA-SPARU members opened fire during a wake at Crossing Magallon in Barangay Bulad, Isabela, Negros Occidental.

The fatalities were identified as retired Staff Sergeant Jose Joerito Amable, head of the Civil Security Group for Moises Padilla Mayor Magdaleno Peña; retired police Alejandro Borres; and a civilian identified as Pedirico Bitgue.

Wounded in the attack were 10-year-old Timothy Aaron Achivar and Alquin Geneterula, Jr., a teacher.

The Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOPPO) criticized the incident, stating the rebels were “clearly showing” their lack of concern for the safety of the community./DGB, WDJ
