The Department of Labor and Employment-Region VI (DOLE-6) recently revealed a contingency plan for displaced Boracay workers.
According to DOLE-6 director, Atty. Johnson Cañete, registered workers who lose their jobs at hotels, resorts, or restaurants may seek emergency employment by working with rehabilitation programs, such fixing sewage systems or taking part in demolishing illegal structures.
DOLE will fund for the emergency employment scheme, where workers will earn a minimum daily wage, Cañete added.
He also explained, employment terms may range from the normal 30-day emergency employment to a proposed emergency employment program that may last up to three months.
There are currently 17,735 registered workers in Boracay, based on data from the Malay municipal government.
Meanwhile, DOLE-6 will also handle job facilitation and job referrals to other displaced workers, while coordinating with the Technical Educations and Skills Development Authority for skills training.
DOLE-6 is also spearheading two job fairs over the next two months./WDJ
