The Malay municipal government, which has jurisdiction over resort destination Boracay, recently announced they would be phasing out old gasoline-fueled tricycles on the island and replacing them with environmentally-friendly modes of transportation, as part of the ongoing effort to clean up the island.
The phase-out is scheduled to take place by September.
The local government said operators have until August 30 to acquire motorized electronic tricycles.
Boracay continues to be under scrutiny after President Rodrigo Duterte earlier referred to the island as a “cesspool.” Various government agencies have since proposed a closure of the tourist destination later this month./WDJ
