An ordinance recently passed the Bacolod City Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) on its first reading, which would require dog and cat owners to register their pets with the City Veterinary Office.
The policy also requires all pets to be vaccinated against rabies annually, along with limiting the number of pets permitted per household.
According to the ordinance, authored by Bacolod City Councilor Wilson Gamboa, Jr., the policy will “ensure all domesticated animals are properly immunized, registered, and that every immunized and registered animal be issued a tag.”
The legislation cites RA 8485 or The Animal Welfare Act of 1998, and also seeks to promote public health by safeguarding city residents from potential animal hazards.
With regard to the number of pets allowed per household, the ordinance notes a maximum of four, with the exception for those possessing a special permit as a trainer, breeder, or retailer.
The policy only pertains to dogs and cats.
Penalties for violating the ordinance include P1,000 and/or imprisonment for five days after the first offense, P3,000 and 15 days on the second, and P5,000 and 30 days on the third./WDJ
