In response to reports the provincial PDP-Laban chapter is organizing a united slate for the 2019 midterm elections, Negros Occidental Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson yesterday said most politicians in Negros support the move.

According to the vice governor, the PDP-Laban would like to see the province with one common candidate, which he noted is reminiscent of 2001.

Despite being a member of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), Lacson called a unified team “most welcome.”

Meanwhile, when asked about surveys showing Negros Occidental third district Rep. Alfredo Benitez not polling well in terms of a senatorial seat, the vice governor said he is still waiting for the congressman to make an announcement on 2019.

Aside running for Senate, Benitez is also among the list of possible gubernatorial candidates, alongside Lacson and 2016 vice gubernatorial candidate and former Negros Occidental fifth district Rep. Jeffrey Ferrer.

“I’m seeing [Benitez] over the weekend, hopefully he is ready to make an announcement,” the vice governor said.

Lacson added, if it came down to a race for governor, the incumbent provincial official said he would negotiate with Benitez, noting he can still serve one more term as vice governor.

Last month, PDP-Laban Negros Occidental Secretary-General Yves Akol said the local chapter has yet to discuss political plans for 2019.

He said the party’s future political plans, especially in the province, would be discussed soon alongside Negros Occidental PDP-Laban provincial president, Atty. Clint Aranas./DGB, WDJ
