Department of the Interior and Local Government-Region VI (DILG-6) director, Atty. Anthony Nuyda, recently revealed the DILG is considering filing charges against local government officials found to be responsible for environmental violations at resort destination Boracay, which President Rodrigo Duterte previously referred to as a “cesspool.”

The president earlier called on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to get a handle of the island’s pollution issue within six months or risk being shut down.

“As to what charges will be filed, we cannot tell that at the moment,” Nuyda said.

However, he noted, those named would likely face negligence charges.

Meanwhile, with the DENR serving closure notices to various establishments across Boracay, the Department of Labor and Employment-Region VI (DOLE-6) said they would provide assistance to displaced workers.

According to DOLE-6 information officer Amy Judicpa, the local government agency is already providing livelihood assistance and is currently looking into organizing a job fair.

“We will invite various employers [to] the job fair to help the affected workers in case Boracay businesses really close,” she said./PLL, WDJ
