In response to the ongoing pollution situation at resort destination Boracay, Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. yesterday affirmed resorts in Negros Occidental are in compliance with environmental law.

He said a majority of local establishments have sewage treatment facilities and the local Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) regularly conducts inspections.

The governor also told the media he would close down any resort in the province that does not follow environmental guidelines and urged local residents to report those committing violations to PENRO.

Earlier, President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to shut down Boracay if the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) did not get a handle of the ongoing pollution problem within six months.

As of posting, the DENR has issued 200 notices of violation to various establishments operating at the tourist destination./DGB, WDJ
