Iloilo City recognizes academic achievements

Iloilo City Mayor Jose Espinosa III recognized academic achievements by local students during a flag ceremony earlier this week at City Hall.

St. Paul University Iloilo alumni Kevin Ceroriales Bordones and Jayson Nandin Montinola were awarded mayor’s citations after coming in first and ninth, respectively, in the recent physical therapist board examinations.

Bordones was provided with a P5,000 incentive while Montinola received P3,000.

“We are proud of what these professionals have achieved,” said the mayor.

Meanwhile, local winners of international math competition were also recognized.

“They are best examples to other children, especially those afraid of mathematics,” Espinosa said. “They’ve been through a lot of trainings, with the help of coaches and teachers.”

Matthew Defensor of the Solomon Integrated School De Iloilo won gold and silver in the individual category of the Malaysia International Mathematics Olympiad (MIMO). Defensor’s schoolmate Angela Kyra Salarda won bronze.

Salarda also compete in the International Math Open for Young Achievers (IMOYA), where she also won bronze in the individual category.

Other bronze medal winners included Alexis Grif Genovatin of Ateneo de Iloilo, Lorenzo Garcia of the Parents for Education Foundation, Inc. (PAREF) Westbridge School, James Michael Young of Iloilo National High School, and Justin Rey Balopenos of Philippine Science High School Western Visayas Campus.

At the International Mathematics Wizard Challenge, Alexis Jane Que and Ma. Alyssa Bea Duya of Iloilo Scholastic Academy won silver. In the team category, Ma. Marju Jeremia Sobeza and Maria Samantha Cristobal of Ateneo de Iloilo won bronze medals.

Meanwhile, Rezh Bernice Loretizo of Ateneo de Iloilo and Jacques Simon Timtiman of Iloilo Scholastic Academy won bronze medals at the IMC International Mathematics Contest, David Matthew Dolar of the PAREF Westbridge School took silver during Enjoy Mathematics Summer Camp, James Matthew Young of Iloilo National High School won bronze at the India Primary Mathematics Olympiad, and Cassey Jules Uygongco of Hua Siong College of Iloilo won silver at the Olympics Mathematics 3D Cup Pan Asia Pacific International Competition./PLL, WDJ
