BCPO-TMU: Traffic accidents up 65%
By Dominique Gabriel G. Bañaga
After the Bacolod City Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) passed a resolution during their regular session earlier this week calling for lighting fixtures to be erected near dimly-lit crosswalks, Bacolod City Councilor Caesar Distrito, who penned the said resolution, said there is also a need for reflectorized signage.
In an interview yesterday with Watchmen Daily Journal, he said reflectorized signage placed before and after crosswalks will serve as a “precautionary measure.”
The city councilor cited the case of 69-year-old Salvacion Alejano, who was recently killed after being struck by a motorcycle while crossing the Bacolod-Murcia Road in Barangay Mansilingan, as his motive for filing the resolution.
He noted, poor lighting in the area contributed to the accident, aside from the alleged overspeeding by the motorcycle operator.
Meanwhile, based on new data released by the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) Traffic Management Unit (TMU), the number of traffic accidents in the city has risen to 66 this month, an increase of 65 percent compared to the same period last year.
BCPO director, Police Senior Superintendent Francisco Ebreo, claimed most traffic incidents can be attributed to poor weather conditions.
He added, other causes of traffic accidents include drivers under the influence of liquor, poor road condition, and driver carelessness./DGB, WDJ
