Barangay Captain arrested in Kabankalan City for gun possession

A barangay captain from Mabinay, a municipality in Negros Oriental, was arrested by Kabankalan City police after he yielded a gun at a police checkpoint at Purok Buri in Barangay 4, Kabankalan City, over the weekend.

Police identified the suspect as 59-year-old Jerry Vargas, barangay captain for the town’s Barangay Pandanon.

police said Vargas, who was operating a motorcycle with a backrider, identified as Bambi Hechanova, were stopped.

Following a search, authorities recovered a .45 caliber pistol with one magazine in Vargas’ possession.

Vargas was arrested on the spot after failing to show any documents allowing him to carry the said firearm.

The barangay captain faces illegal possession of firearms charges and is detained at the Kabankalan City Police Station./DGB, WDJ
