Mayor echoes Governor’s call for mechanization
By Dominique Gabriel G. Bañaga
Amid reports showing rice production decreased in Bago City between the last quarter of 2017 and the early months of 2018, Bago City Mayor Nicholas Yulo blamed the situation on heavy rains experienced throughout the region recently, noting the rice supply has also tightened because the National Food Authority is currently purchasing rice at P22 per kilogram.
However, the mayor said, while he cannot specify the exact amount in losses, it is “not that much.”
Yulo also expressed his support for Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. calling for more mechanization in agriculture, echoing the governor’s statements on farm laborers leaving the industry for better working conditions and benefits offered in the construction and call center industries.
On separate occasions, Marañon earlier called for mechanization, citing the labor issue and pointing out farmers would spend less of their income if they switched to the technology.
Yulo confirmed several farmers in the city have already started investing in mechanization, affirming they were saving more money as compared to utilizing traditional farming methods./DGB, WDJ
