An inmate of the Police Station 1 (PS1) detention facility was declared dead after he hanged himself inside his prison cell, yesterday morning.

While only referred to as ‘Bebot,’ PS1 commander, Police Senior Inspector Leo Estopa, identified the deceased as a resident of Escalante City, Negros Occidental.

Estopa said Bebot was detained after allegedly becoming unruly after drinking the night before.

The station commander said Bebot was uncooperative when police were trying to take down his information and chose to have him detained until he sobered up.

However, around 6:03 a.m., inmates from another cell shouted for help, as police discovered the suspect hanging inside his cell.

Authorities immediately rushed Bebot to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH), where he was declared dead on arrival.

Estopa said the suspect used a three-foot tarpaulin and tied it to a steel bar.

The PS1 chief believes Bebot might have been suffering from depression, as guards and fellow inmates claimed Bebot was “murmuring” inside his cell prior to the incident./DGB, WDJ
