In light of speculation the 2019 elections may be postponed, Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr., who is term-limited and is not seeking re-election, yesterday said, “Let’s wait and see.”
Both House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III earlier revealed the shift to federalism may force the postponement of the 2019 polls.
When pressed if, as an incumbent, the situation would be personally beneficial, the governor said incumbent officials could be replaced.
Marañon also affirmed his support for a federal form of government and said there is still no clear vision on what version of federalism will be adopted.
“There are several versions of Federalism,” he said. “It will take a lot of debate.”
In addition, Pimentel said there is also the possibility of extending President Rodrigo Duterte’s term in office if the shift to federal government pushes through./DGB, WDJ
