The New People’s Army (NPA) in Negros accused the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) of “being opportunists” after reports surfaced claiming counter-revolutionary groups allegedly extorted money and rice by using their logos and name.

In a statement released by NPA-Leonardo Panaligan Command spokesperson Ka JB Regalado, the rebel group is condemning the AFP for taking such actions, especially against peasants living in the mountainous areas of the island.

Regalado claimed the AFP wants to poison the minds of the people in order to turn them against their group, especially after President Rodrigo Duterte declared the NPA a “terrorist organization.”

He also accused the AFP and the Philippine National Police (PNP) of being responsible for the deaths of nine civilians this year.

Regalado pointed out extrajudicial killings in the city are a manifestation of the administration’s counter-revolutionary attacks.

He added, the Duterte administration is desperate by carrying out harassment and arresting those the group claim to be innocent civilians, as well those supporting their cause, through the use of Oplan: Kapayapaan.

Philippine Army 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) commander, Major General Jon Aying, meanwhile, denied the allegations and, pointed out, it is their responsibility to ensure the safety and security of the people.

Aying also said the NPA “projected its presence” after conducting an ambush in Guihulngan City this year, which resulted in the deaths of six police officers.

He added, the NPA has started to lose ground due to aggressive operations being carried out by the AFP and the PNP./DGB, WDJ
